Rooted In Recovery
Rooted in Recovery is Vets Recover’s therapeutic garden program where veterans, first responders, and families grow plants—and, at the same time, grow confidence, stability, and hope.
Rooted in Recovery Garden Program
Rooted in Recovery turns a simple idea—planting and tending a garden—into a powerful tool for whole‑person healing. In our garden space, participants work side‑by‑side to nurture living things, build routine, and reconnect with the rhythms of life and the seasons.
What We Do
- Provide a therapeutic garden space at Vets Recover, including ADA‑accessible raised beds so all abilities can participate.
- Teach basic gardening skills: planning beds, planting, watering, weeding, harvesting, and caring for tools.
- Incorporate reflection and peer support into garden time, using what’s happening in the soil as a starting point for conversations about recovery, growth, and change.
- Share the harvest with participants, families, and the broader veteran community when possible, turning the garden into a source of both nourishment and pride.
How Gardening Supports Recovery
- Gardening is more than a hobby—it’s a hands‑on way to practice recovery skills.
- Builds responsibility: plants need consistent care; showing up for the garden reinforces showing up for yourself and your recovery.
- Creates routine and structure: regular garden times help re‑establish healthy daily and weekly rhythms.
- Boosts confidence and self‑efficacy: seeing something you planted grow and thrive reminds you that your actions matter and change is possible.
- Reduces stress and supports mental health: time outdoors, working with soil and plants, has been shown to lower anxiety, improve mood, and increase a sense of calm and grounding.
Building Community and Connection
Rooted in Recovery is also a community‑builder.
- Veterans, first responders, and family members work side‑by‑side, sharing stories and learning from each other as they tend the beds.
- The garden provides a low‑pressure space where conversation happens naturally—sometimes about plants and recipes, sometimes about life and recovery.
- Participants see the direct impact of their work when fresh produce is shared with others, creating a sense of purpose, contribution, and belonging.
Part of Whole‑Person Healing at Vets Recover
- Rooted in Recovery fits directly into Vets Recover’s “whole person healing” model.
- While outpatient and inpatient services address medical, mental health, and substance use needs, the garden addresses daily life, purpose, and community.
- Gardening gives participants a real‑world place to practice patience, frustration tolerance, problem‑solving, and teamwork alongside peers.
- By caring for the garden, people are reminded that growth takes time, support, and consistent effort—exactly what recovery requires.
