Diane "Scotty" Irwin - US Army
Program Coordinator, Rooted in Recovery Program
Diane “Scotty” Irwin brings a unique blend of first responder experience, military service, and creative design to her role as Program Coordinator for the Rooted in Recovery Program at Vets Recovery. After serving as a Medic (68W) in the Army National Guard and spending much of her career as a First Responder, Scotty sought alternative treatments for PTSD. This search led her to a Washington State nonprofit, where she was introduced to farming, peer support, and ultimately, horticultural therapy.
Through horticultural therapy—a practice that uses plant-based activities to support physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being—Scotty discovered a powerful way to promote healing and connection. Drawing on her background in art and interior design, she now applies her creative skills to outdoor environments that nurture both growth and serenity.
At Vets Recovery, Scotty developed the Rooted in Recovery Program to provide a calm, purposeful space for veterans to reconnect with nature, build confidence, and learn new skills through gardening. The program fosters meaningful connections, reduces stress, and enhances overall quality of life through the simple yet transformative act of growing food together.
